hyperplasia and sexual dysfunction Sir—Vahan Kassabian’s Rapid review (Jan 4, p 60)1 prompts me to ask whether the relation between benign prostatic hyperplasia and sexual dysfunction is coincidental or not? Women can develop sexual dysfunction (dyspareunia) and uterine enlargement with adenomyosis after damage to their inferior hypogastric plexus, as a result of prolonged or premature labour.2 Damage to the endometrial-myometrial and subserosal nerve plexi seems pivotal in disrupting tissue boundaries in endocrine-driven hyperplasia. Could similar damage to the male hypogastric plexi cause injuries to subcapsular and periurethral nerve plexi in the prostate with concomitant sexual dysfunction?
