Abstract

The new low dose oral contraceptive SH 973 (Gynovlane, Schering), containing 50 mcg ethinylestradiol and 2 mg norethisterone acetate, was administered to 134 women for a variety of gynecologic indications. The most common indications were: contraception, 60 cases; ovarian cyst, 18; dysmenorrhea, 16; functional bleeding, 15; and endometriosis, 9. Treatment totaled 636 cycles, ranging from 1 to 11 cycles per patient, most often 3 cycles. All treatments were successful except in 2 women with ovarian cysts, 3 with functional bleeding, and 1 of 3 with hypoplastic uterus. There were no pregnancies or thromboembolic, psychiatric, or diabetic complications. Side effects included increased blood pressure in 5%, decreased in 6%, weight gain in 9.7%, bleeding in 8%, amenorrhea in 3.7%, leg pain in 3%, and breast congestion in 5%.
