ICP-MS Based Elemental Profiling of Crinum malabaricum: Ecological Applications in Phytoremediation and Bioindication

Abstract

ABSTRACT Aim: The present study aims to determine the essential macro and micronutrients, non-essential and potentially toxic heavy metal composition of C. malabaricum and to evaluate its potential role as a bioindicator species in aquatic ecosystems. This work represents the first detailed elemental assessment of the species. Location: Periya, (12°24.526′N, 75°06.571′E; 102 m alt.), Kasargod. Time Period: Present Major Taxa Studied: Crinum malabaricum Lekhak & Yadav Methods: Plant and sediment samples were collected along with sediment samples and segregated into shoot, bulb and seeds. Following APHA (2017), extraction was done with microwave digestion procedure and elemental quantification using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (iCAP Q, Thermo Fisher Scientific) against a multi-element standard solution (ICP VI, Merck KGaA), covering 22 elements in total. Results: Results revealed differential partitioning of essential macronutrients and micronutrients across vegetative and reproductive organs, along with trace accumulation of Cd, Ba, Pb, Ag, and Ga. Bulbs acted as major reservoirs for essential macronutrients (Na, K & Ca), essential micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu) and non-essential heavy metals (Al, Cr, Sr) and potentially toxic metals (Cd, Pb), while shoots preferentially accumulated Zn, seeds accumulated elements critical for reproduction, such as B, K, and, interestingly, Ag, while largely excluding toxic metals Cd and Pb. These findings highlight species-specific strategies of nutrient allocation and metal sequestration in C. malabaricum. The presence and partitioning of these elements suggest its potential role as a bioindicator of aquatic nutrient status and a candidate species for phytoremediation in nutrient-enriched or metal-impacted ecosystems.
