Abstract

Abstract Plaza scale significantly influences human comfort, yet traditional urban design guidelines often adopt fixed L/H (length/height) ratios without empirical valida- tion. This study investigates how different L/H ratios affect human comfort using Virtual Reality and psychophysiological measurements, including Electroen- cephalogram (EEG), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and Photoplethysmography (PPG). A total of 26 plaza configurations with varying building heights (3-100m) were tested on 42 participants. Results indicate that the optimal L/H ratio is not fixed but decreases from 3:1 to 1.9:1 as building height increases. EEG and GSR data reveal significant correlations between spatial perception and physiologi- cal responses, challenging conventional urban design assumptions. Findings offer evidence-based insights for refining public plaza dimensions to enhance comfort and usability. This research bridges urban design and human-centered metrics, providing a data-driven framework for future public space planning.

fixed L/H (length/height) ratios without empirical valida- tion. This study investigates how different L/H ratios affect human comfort using Virtual Reality and psychophysiological measurements, including Electroen- cephalogram (EEG), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and Photoplethysmography (PPG). A total of 26 plaza configurations with varying building heights (3-100m) were tested on 42 participants. Results indicate that the optimal L/H ratio is not fixed but decreases from 3:1 to 1.9:1 as building height increases. EEG and GSR data reveal significant correlations between spatial perception and physiologi- cal responses, challenging conventional urban design assumptions. Findings offer evidence-based insights for refining public plaza dimensions to enhance comfort and usability. This research bridges urban design and human-centered metrics, providing a data-driven framework for future public space planning.\u003c/p\u003e","manuscriptTitle":"Revisiting Plaza Scale and Human Comfort: A Virtual Reality-Based Psychophysiological Analysis","msid":"","msnumber":"","nonDraftVersions":[{"code":1,"date":"2025-10-15 11:54:10","doi":"10.21203/rs.3.rs-7856172/v1","editorialEvents":[{"type":"communityComments","content":0}],"status":"published","journal":{"display":true,"email":"[email protected]","identity":"researchsquare","isNatureJournal":false,"hasQc":true,"allowDirectSubmit":true,"externalIdentity":"","sideBox":"","snPcode":"","submissionUrl":"/submission","title":"Research Square","twitterHandle":"researchsquare","acdcEnabled":true,"dfaEnabled":false,"editorialSystem":"","reportingPortfolio":"","inReviewEnabled":false,"inReviewRevisionsEnabled":true}}],"origin":"","ownerIdentity":"8a6a75ac-5ba0-4c73-9b12-d34438268119","owner":[],"postedDate":"October 15th, 2025","published":true,"recentEditorialEvents":[],"rejectedJournal":[],"revision":"","amendment":"","status":"posted","subjectAreas":[],"tags":[],"updatedAt":"2025-10-20T11:38:07+00:00","versionOfRecord":[],"versionCreatedAt":"2025-10-15 11:54:10","video":"","vorDoi":"","vorDoiUrl":"","workflowStages":[]},"version":"v1","identity":"rs-7856172","journalConfig":"researchsquare"},"__N_SSP":true},"page":"/article/[identity]/[[...version]]","query":{"redirect":"/article/rs-7856172","identity":"rs-7856172","version":["v1"]},"buildId":"8U1c8b4HqxoKbykW_rLl7","isFallback":false,"isExperimentalCompile":false,"dynamicIds":[84888],"gssp":true,"scriptLoader":[]}

Ask this paper AI returns verbatim quotes from the full text · source: preprint-html

Answers must be backed by verbatim quotes from this paper's full text. Hallucinated quotes are dropped automatically; if no verbatim passage answers the question, we say so. How this works
