This pilot study investigated the presence of endometriosis cells in pelvic sentinel lymph nodes among fourteen women undergoing surgical resection for symptomatic rectovaginal endometriosis. Researchers injected Patent Blue dye to identify and excise sentinel lymph nodes, subsequently analyzing them via immunohistochemistry for estrogen and progesterone receptors, CD10, and cytokeratin. The findings revealed that while typical endometriotic lesions were detected in only three nodes, disseminated receptor-positive cells were present in over eighty percent of the identified sentinel lymph nodes. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically examining the potential for lymphatic spread of disease cells from deep infiltrating rectovaginal lesions.
