Abstract

This paper introduces five fundamental dimensions of software form-structure, space, dynamics, intelligence, and aesthetics-as a conceptual framework for understanding and evaluating software systems. These dimensions offer ways to describe how systems are organised, how they inhabit computational and perceptual environments, how they change over time, how they reason or adapt, and how they are encountered and made sense of by people. The paper also considers how these dimensions, individually and in combination, shape key software quality attributes such as utility and value, efficiency, reliability, safety and security, accessibility, usability, and maintainability. Rather than elevating any single aspect above the others, the framework aims to support a more integrated view of software design. It is proposed as a unifying perspective that helps relate discussions of architecture, behaviour, intelligence, perception, and experience, and as a practical lens for guiding holistic analysis and design in different classes of software systems.

Ask this paper AI returns verbatim quotes from the full text · source: preprint-html

Answers must be backed by verbatim quotes from this paper's full text. Hallucinated quotes are dropped automatically; if no verbatim passage answers the question, we say so. How this works
