Umbilical nodule in a 14-year-old girl

The presence of an umbilical nodule provides multiple diagnostic possibilities, some of them of great clinical relevance. We present the case of a 14 year-old girl with an ulcerated congenital umbilical nodule. The biopsy showed focal replacement of the epidermis and dermis by intestinal mucosa with lymphoid aggregates. It was diagnosed as an umbilical polyp, which corresponds to a congenital malformation resulting from the partial obliteration of the vitelline duct. Every umbilical nodule must be submitted to biopsy to determine its na-ture that includes congenital malformations, endometriosis and metastatic tu-mors known as ¿Sister Mary Joseph nodules¿
