RESULTS IN 138 CASES OF ENDOMETRIOSIS TREATED BY CONSERVATIVE SURGERY

Abstract 1. 1. One hundred thirty-eight cases of pelvic endometriosis, treated by laparotomy which conserved childbearing ability, are reviewed. 2. 2. Sixty-eight of these cases, or 49.3 per cent, were relieved of symptoms; 29, or 21 per cent, were partially relieved; and 41, or 29.7 per cent, were failures, requiring later radical surgery or radiation. 3. 3. One hundred twelve patients in the series were married and under 40 years of age; of these, 30, or 26.8 per cent, delivered a total of 39 living children. The average interval between operation and delivery was 2.7 years. 4. 4. The prognosis for symptomatic relief and future pregnancy does not seem to be affected by age, symptomatology, the location and extent of the disease, or the magnitude of the conservative operation performed.
