Abstract

Abstract Herein I present a simple model on how the nature of energy sources is connected to the welfare of a society. I find that the EROI value of an energy source is the key descriptor for the welfare of an economy and consequently the well-being of its constituents. While the presented model is kept extremely simple, it qualitatively matches historic experiences and allows a view into the future. It also suggests that the longevity of renewable energies is the key factor in their viability as an energy source.
