Ayurvedic Management of Vataja Yonivyapada With Special Reference to Endometriosis - A Case Study

Background: Vataja Yonivyapadais one of the twenty gynecological disorders described in Ayurveda, caused predominantly by vitiated Vāta dosha. It presents with pelvic pain, dryness, fatigue, and scanty or painful menstruation. In modern gynaecology, endometriosis is a chronic condition marked by ectopic endometrial tissue, dysmenorrhea, and infertility—features that correspond closely with those of VatajaYonivyapada. Objective: To explore the Ayurvedic understanding and management of endometriosis in terms of VatajaYonivyapada. Methodology: A 33-year-old woman with chronic pelvic pain, vomiting and headache during menses, scanty menstrual flow, and in USG: adenomyosis changes seen. Based on Ayurvedic dosha assessment, the condition was diagnosed as VatajaYonivyapada, and management was done using Vāta-shamaka chikitsa, Shirodhara. Results: Notable relief was observed within three months of Ayurvedic management. Pain decreased, headache and vomiting stopped, and no adverse effects were reported. Conclusion: Ayurvedic treatment targeting Vāta dosha showed good results in endometriosis when considered through the lens of VatajaYonivyapada. This supports the use of an Ayurvedic approach in managing chronic gynaecological conditions.
