Abstract

This is a systematic review of all veridical near-death perceptions, published in scientific journals up to August 2024.Eleven studies reporting 11 single cases of veridical near-death experiences during or concomitant with severe illnesses in a clinical condition of general anesthesia or cardiac arrest, were included in the review.Ten of the eleven cases reported visual perceptions. Four of these ten cases also reported auditory perceptions. Only one case reported exclusively auditory perception.Evidence that they may be obtained by bypassing their sensory organs is more plausible for visual experiences than for auditory experiences because all participants had their eyes closed during their general anesthesia or during their cardiac arrest.
