Adaptation of the freshwater anaerobic methanotroph ‘ Ca . Methanoperedens vercellensis’ to low pH levels reveals membrane lipid remodelling
This study investigated whether the freshwater anaerobic methanotroph “Ca. Methanoperedens vercellensis” can remain metabolically active under low pH, using a granular enrichment culture exposed to pH stress over time. The authors found that activity decreased during initial pH stress but that the organism stayed metabolically active down to pH 5.65 when given appropriate adaptation time, with methane oxidation rate and enrichment state remaining stable after adaptation despite higher maintenance energy needs and the requirement for cytoplasmic pH homeostasis. Lipid analyses showed membrane lipid remodelling, specifically an increase in zwitterionic intact polar lipids over anionic lipids, alongside changes in granule structure.
