THE INFLUENCE OF COVID-19 LOCKDOWN ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN ONDO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ONDO STATE

The COVID-19 pandemic led to nationwide school closures in Nigeria, affecting over 40 million learners. This study examined the influence of the COVID-19 lockdown on students' academic performance in Ondo West Local Government Area, Ondo State. A descriptive survey design was used with a sample of 100 teachers, vice principals, and principals selected via simple random sampling from secondary schools. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The findings revealed implemented measures like online teaching to curb COVID-19 spread in schools. However, the lockdown negatively impacted students’ study habits, external exam performance, and practical subjects. The lockdown also paralyzed activities, increased social media influence, job losses, and technology adoption. The study recommends improved digital school facilities, uniform curriculums, educational reforms, and government investments to address inequality heightened by the pandemic.
