Abstract

Flow is an optimal psychophysical state which is experienced when an individual’s skill is in balance with the challenge of the task at hand which is defined by a clear goal and acting upon the same distorts their perception of time, characterized by having control over the actions, high level of concentration and loss of self-consciousness. There are several non-cognitive traits found to be associated with flow proneness such as grit, growth mindset, emotional intelligence and so on. In this study, the effect of Inspiration and Self-perceived Success on flow proneness is investigated. Indian singers (N=19) practising and performing different genres of music were focused on to study the interaction of prior variables. A significant positive correlation between both inspiration and self-perceived success with dispositional flow was found. Mediation analysis revealed how inspiration affects the predictive value of self-perceived success and grit on dispositional flow. This study sheds light on the new potential predictors of flow experience in singers and briefly explains the psychology of Indian singers as well.
