Abstract

Abstract Cox model is the most commonly used model for regression analysis of failure time data and a great deal of literature has been developed for its estimation under various contexts. In this paper, we consider its estimation when there exist random change points and a cured subgroup and one observes only interval-censored data with the focus on simultaneous variable selection and estimation, which has not been discussed before. To address the problem, we present a proportional hazards mixture cure model and develop a penalized sieve maximum likelihood estimation procedure with the use of Bernstein polynomials and the minimum approximated information criterion. The oracle property of the resulting estimator is established and one advantage of the proposed method is that it does not need the selection of tuning parameters. An extensive simulation study is performed and indicates that the proposed method works well in practice, and it is applied to an Alzheimer’s Disease study that motivated this work.
