Abstract
Using the optical interaction potential between an electron and a helium atom, we calculate the collision frequency and energy transfer rate during the elastic scattering of electrons on helium atoms. The resulting effective frequency as a function of energy exhibits a maximum consistent with experimental data. The rate of energy transfer is in good agreement with other authors' calculations at low electron energies, with discrepancies increasing as the energy increases.
