Abstract

Abstract A violent geyser in a storm sewer is a phenomenon in which an air-water mixture violently erupts from the manhole. Although the sewer tunnel pressure is low, the eruption height can reach tens of meters above the ground. This article proposes a new hypothesis: that these geysers are produced due to interfacial instabilities of the stormwater draining down the deep vertical pipe. Numerical simulations were able to reproduce geyser characteristics, such as eruption height, geyser timing, and frequency, similar to actual sewer geysers. In addition, the role of the water level on the pavement in influencing geyser characteristics is also investigated.
