Abstract

The therapeutic alliance is the strength of the relationship between a therapist and a client. It is evident that both parties may experience disputes, weakening the alliance. A review of 26 existing studies was conducted to assess the therapeutic alliance’s stability between two individuals with a notable age difference. This examination yielded conclusions based on patterns in attitudes that Generation X (Gen X) and Generation Z (Gen Z) exhibit towards each other, and the potential implications for the alliance. According to the review, generational differences within patient-therapist interaction can hurt the therapeutic relationship and overall treatment efficacy. To address this issue in counseling, relational cultural therapy (RCT) is suggested as a method intended to bridge generational conflicts between Gen X and Gen Z. Further study examining how age factors impact the therapeutic alliance is required to arrive at a definite conclusion for the effectiveness of RCT in mitigating generational discrepancies.
