A Clinical Trial of Wrist-Ankle Acupuncture for Abirritation during High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Treatment of Adenomyosis
This study compared wrist-ankle acupuncture to pethidine injections for pain relief during high-intensity focused ultrasound treatment for adenomyosis, finding acupuncture was equally effective at 30 and 60 minutes post-treatment and lacked adverse effects.

This single-center clinical trial studied wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) versus pethidine injection for pain during high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment in 58 women with adenomyosis, measuring visual analog scale (VAS) pain at baseline and at 10 minutes, 30 minutes, and 1 hour after analgesic therapy, alongside adverse effects. The WAA group had higher median VAS pain at 10 minutes than the pethidine group, but pain relief was eventually similar at later time points, and no adverse effects were observed with WAA. In contrast, the pethidine group had multiple adverse events reported in 11 patients, including vomiting, dizziness, hidrorrhea, and one case of treatment-induced skin scald, with all reactions resolving within 1 day. Limitations explicitly noted include subjective VAS assessment and the single-center design limiting generalizability. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—though it specifically focuses on adenomyosis-related pain during HIFU, it remains directly relevant to adenomyosis.
