Abstract

The chapter provides an overview of the clinical problem of infertility as it presents to gynaecologists in practice. The epidemiology of infertility is discussed, leading to a description of the assessment of infertile couples. A critique of the place of secondary investigations under the broad headings of male factor infertility, disorders of ovulation, tubal factor infertility, endometriosis and uterine factors and unexplained infertility is provided. Some remarks on treatment options are provided. Insights which assisted conception techniques bring to our understanding of the pathogenesis of infertility are briefly examined. Integration of services to enable efficient evidence-based management of the infertile couple is emphasized throughout.
