Abstract

Background: Premature ovarian failure (PMOF) affects 1% of women and is most often idiopathic. Women experiencing this disorder at a very young age are subjected to prolonged periods of hypoestrogenism and its adverse consequences. Objective: The present study was designed to highlight this disorder and its effects in 5 women aged < 25, explore management strategies for counteracting the sequelae of PMOF, and improve patients' quality of life. Methods: Estrogen and progestin replacement was provided for all of the patients as well as calcium supplementation. Results: All of the patients responded to the treatment by menstruating. Conclusions: Estrogen and progestational agents in adequate doses, and calcium and vitamin D should always be included in the therapeutic armamentarium for very young patients with PMOF. The management approach in these cases should be targeted at achieving and maintaining near normal physical and psychological development and to familiarizing these women with alternative family-building plans.
