Abstract

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic pelvic pain syndrome. The key symptoms are urinary urgency, frequency, pelvic pain, bowel dysfunction, and vaginal pain in the abscence of other identifiable causes such as urinary tract infection, bladder cancer, or endometriosis. Treatment should be multifocal, not directed solely toward the bladder, and multimodal encompassing stress reduction, psychological support, dietary/behavioral therapy, pelvic floor and physical therapy, pharmacologic therapy and neuromodulation.
