Why Some Words Stick and Others Fade: A Neurocognitive Perspective on Vocabulary Learning

Abstract

Research on word learning and memory often treats words as interchangeable, overlooking how linguistic features shape encoding and recall. In this review, we advance a neurocognitive-linguistic perspective on word memorability that integrates behavioral, linguistic, and neuroscience evidence to explain why some words “stick” while others fade. We synthesize findings on how familiarity, frequency, concreteness, emotional valence and arousal, phonological structure, and semantic distinctiveness influence word learning and retention. We link these features to several underlying neural mechanisms—including amygdala-hippocampal coupling, sensorimotor cortical engagement, and inferior frontal and anterior temporal hubs—and situate them within predictive and embodied frameworks of language. These insights help to refine theories of word memorability and carry practical implications. We connect basic mechanisms to educational practice (evidence-based vocabulary selection, gesture- and rhythm-based scaffolding, adaptive digital learning) and to clinical rehabilitation (aphasia and dementia interventions that leverage high-imageability, emotionally meaningful or dense-neighborhood items, and multimodal encoding). Finally, we argue for integrating linguistic and neurocognitive determinants into computational and theoretical models of word learning to improve predictions of memorability and support more personalized approaches to language instruction and rehabilitation.
