Bias and sensitivity in face matching: the independence of match and mismatch trials

Presents a simple simulation of participants with varying ability and bias in face matching tasks, showing that principal components analysis may produce a separation of match and mismatch trial scores, as observed in real experiments. Having a bias, and being better at either match or mismatch trials are equivalent; why people show such biases or different strengths remains a research question.
