{"paper_id":"fd95f939-b496-4b35-9c91-c98325925efe","body_text":"Abstract\nEndometriosis, the ectopic location of endometrial tissue, may have an incidence up to 6% of all women of reproductive age. Patients present with symptoms ranging from chronic pelvic pain, to dyspareunia to infertility. Up to 50% of infertile women may have associated endometriosis. The condition ameliorates during pregnancy and spontaneously resolves at the menopause and after oophorectomy. There is however no uniformly successful therapy for endometriosis when future fertility is desired. Treatment has included conservative surgery, combination high dose oral contraceptives taken continuously for 6 months (induced pseudopregnancy) and more recently, danazol, an androgenic isoxazole derivative of 17α-ethinyl testosterone. While daily doses of 400–800 mg for 6 months of this steroid lead to clinical and objective improvement in up to 70% of cases, approximately 85% of patients experience troublesome side effects including weight gain, reduced breast size, acne and hirsutism [1–4].\nPreview\nUnable to display preview.
