The tumors contained “cysts lined with ciliated epithelium” and were “filled with blood.” It was Cullen’s work that forced scientists to recognize that these tumors contain heterotopic uterine epithelium, stroma, and glands.3 Sampson in the 1920s is, however, usually credited with describing the clinical entity of endometriosis and suggesting menstrual regurgitation as the cause.4,5\nPreview\nUnable to display preview.
