Endometriosis is a common gynecological\ndisease, characterized by ectopic deposits of endometrial\ntissue outside of the uterine cavity, and it is associated with\npelvic pain and infertility, with an important impact on the\nquality of life. At this point there is a controversy regarding\nthe etiology and pathophysiology of endometriosis and it\nseems that pro-angiogenic growth factors might be involved,\nbut their role is not completely understood.\nObjective. To evaluate the serum concentration\nof the main growth factors in patients with diagnosed\nendometriosis compared to healthy controls.\nS ubjects and Methods. A total of 157 women were\ndivided into two study groups (Group I – endometriosis;\nGroup 2 – healthy women). Serum levels of VEGF, G-CSF,\nGM-CSF, b-FGF, EGF, and HGF were measured with\nHuman Multiplex Cytokine Panels.\nResults. VEGF serum levels were significantly\nlower in women with endometriosis compared to controls\n(1.924±0.145 compared to 1.806±0.078 pg/mL, p<0.001).\nSerum levels of GM-CSF, b-FGF, EGF, and HGF\nrespectively did not differ significantly between patients\nwith endometriosis and healthy controls. G-CSF had a very\nlow detection rate.\nConclusions. The present study showed that VEGF\nserum levels are significantly lower in endometriosis patients\ncompared to healthy controls, indicating a possible role in\nendometriosis pathogenesis.\nKeywords: endometriosis, growth factors, immunology, inflammation.\nCorrespondence: Tudor Drugan MD,“Iuliu Hatieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Department of Medical Informatics and Biostatistics, 6 Victor Babes, Cluj-Napoca, Cluj, 400012, Romania, E-mail: tdrugan@umfcluj.ro","source_license":"CC0","license_restricted":false}
