We show the “hot points” of the MultisliceCT-enteroclysis (MSCTe) in investigation of the bowel endometriosis. We describe our technique to obtain better results in intestinal endometriosis evaluation and how to read images, we show the typical patterns of intestinal endometriosis detected by MSCTe and we underline the usefulness of this technique.\nMethods and Materials\nFrom November 2005 we studied 260 females affected by typical symptoms of pelvic and colorectal endometriosis (i.e. dyspareunia, dysmenorrhoea, chronic pelvic pain). Our protocol of examination is standardised. To obtain an optimal intestinal distension with a good evaluation of the intestinal wall, an intestinal preparation is needed in all cases. We distend the colon with a transparent enema, with 1500-2000 ml of warm tap water on the CT bed (Fig 1). We inject 20 mg i.v. of N-butyl-bromide scopolamine, during the examination to reduce the...\nResults\nWe found three different patterns of bowel endometriosis, following the clinical distinction. In case of large nodules of endometriosis the intestinal invasion is easily detectable (Fig. 3,4,5). The interpretation is more difficult in case of small intestinal nodules. In our experiences there are some signs detectables in intestinal endometriosis, which are grading with MSCTe. 1-the extension of the contact surface between the solid nodule and the intestinal wall; 2-the presence of an acute angle between the margins of the nodule and the intestinal surface; 3-the...\nConclusions\nThe best technique to evaluate the intestinal wall is the computed tomography (Xiong L, AJR 2004; Lefere P, Eur Radiol 2003; Tarjan Z, Eur Radiol 2000; Jang HJ, Radiology 2000; Horton KM, Radiographics 2000). The intestinal distension is essential to evaluate the pathologies involving the intestinal wall. In our experience the transparent distension obtains the best difference in contrast between the wall enhancement and the intestinal wall lesions. MSCTe has high sensibility (97%) and specificity (99%) in nodules detection. MSCTe doesn’t recognise some nodules if...","source_license":"CC0","license_restricted":false}
