Es treten Endometrium-artige Zellverbände außerhalb der Gebärmutterschleimhaut auf. Neben abdominellen Zyklus-abhängigen oder -unabhängigen Schmerzen zählen Dysmenorrhö, Dyspareunie und Infertilität zu den häufigsten Symptomen. Aufgrund der Heterogenität der Erkrankung vergehen im Schnitt sieben Jahre bis zur endgültigen Diagnosestellung, welche letztendlich nur mittels diagnostischer Laparoskopie gestellt werden kann. Neben medikamentösen Behandlungsalternativen stehen operative und ablative Verfahren zur Verfügung.
