These cells potentially could serve as a foundation of adult stem cells aimed at autologous stem cell-based therapies. A mechanistic understanding of these cells and their role in endometrial regeneration may aid to the intentional stimulation of a patient’s endometrial stem cell niche for regenerative therapies. The first evidence reporting their presence described endometrial stem cell as a clonogenic cell population in the human epithelial and stromal endometrium. Clonogenicity of epithelial cells was well supported by transforming growth factor-α (TGFα), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB). Leukemia-inhibitory factor, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), stem-cell factor (SCF), and insulin-like growth factor-I (IFG-I) were inadequately supportive and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) did not affect clonogenicity of epithelial cells. About 3% of epithelial and 6% of stromal cells in mouse endometrium are label-retaining cells (LRCs). Moreover, CD146+ PDGF-Rβ+ human endometrial stem cell shows MSCs-like properties. Stromal cells are abundant in colony-forming cells that undergo differentiation into mesenchymal lineages and express MSC-specific surface markers CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, and CD105. Further investigations have corroborated the evidence for MSC presence in endometrial stroma. The book chapter will provide an in-depth insight into the importance of uterine stem cell and their role in the pathogenesis of female reproductive tract diseases.\nAccess this chapter\nTax calculation will be finalised at checkout\nPurchases are for personal use only\nSimilar content being viewed by others\nAbbreviations\n- ABC:\n-\nATP-binding cassette\n- ABCG2:\n-\nATP-binding cassette subfamily G member 2\n- BCRP1:\n-\nBreast cancer resistance protein\n- bFGF:\n-\nBasic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)\n- BMI-1:\n-\nB-cell-specific Moloney leukemia virus insertion site 1\n- CD:\n-\nCluster of differentiation\n- CFU:\n-\nColony-forming units\n- CSCs:\n-\nCancer stem cells\n- DAPT:\n-\nDipeptide γ-secretase inhibitor\n- EC:\n-\nEndometrial cancer\n- EGF:\n-\nEpidermal growth factor\n- eMSCs:\n-\nEndometrial mesenchymal stem cells\n- EndoSCs:\n-\nEndometrial stem cells\n- ER-Alpha:\n-\nEstrogen-receptor alfa\n- GE:\n-\nGlandular epithelium\n- Gli:\n-\nGlioma-associated oncogene\n- GRO:\n-\nGrowth regulated oncogene\n- HER2:\n-\nHuman epidermal growth factor\n- HGF:\n-\nHepatocyte growth factor\n- HIF-1:\n-\nHypoxia-inducible factor-1\n- HSCs:\n-\nHematopoietic stem cells\n- IGF-1:\n-\nInsulin-like growth factor-1\n- LIF :\n-\nLeukemia-inhibitory factor\n- LRCs:\n-\nLabel-retaining cells\n- MCP-1:\n-\nMonocyte chemoattractant protein-1\n- MenSCs:\n-\nMenstrual blood-derived stem cells\n- MMP:\n-\nMatrix metallopeptidases\n- MSCs:\n-\nMesenchymal stem cells\n- n-cadherin:\n-\nNeural cadherin\n- NK:\n-\nNatural killer\n- PDGF:\n-\nPlatelet-derived growth factor\n- PDGF-Rβ:\n-\nPlatelet-derived growth factor receptor beta\n- PgR:\n-\nProgesterone receptor\n- SCF:\n-\nStem-cell factor\n- SDF-1:\n-\nStromal derived factor\n- SSEA-1:\n-\nStage-specific embryonic antigen-1\n- SUSD2:\n-\nSushi domain containing 2\n- TGFα/β:\n-\nTransforming growth factor-α/β\n- uNK:\n-\nUterine natural killer\n- VEGF:\n-\nVascular endothelial growth factor\nReferences\nAgic A, Xu H, Finas D et al (2006) Is endometriosis associated with systemic subclinical inflammation?
