Da die Erkrankung nur invasiv definitiv diagnostiziert werden kann, ist die genaue Prävalenz unklar; man schätzt, dass 5‒10 % der Frauen im gebärfähigen Alter eine behandlungsbedürftige Endometriose aufweisen. Die genaue Ursache ist ebenfalls unklar, wahrscheinlich spielt die Verschleppung von uterinem Endometrium eine wichtige Rolle.
