Der Name leitet sich von der sonografisch darstellbaren veränderten Morphologie der Ovarien ab. Betroffene Frauen weisen häufig anovulatorische Zyklen, Zyklusstörungen und Zeichen einer Androgenisierung auf. Sie sind gehäuft adipös mit einem erhöhten Risiko für Diabetes mellitus, Hypertonie und die Ausbildung eines metabolischen Syndroms. Psychische Veränderungen wie Depressionen, Angst- und Schlafstörungen treten regelmäßig auf. Durch persistierende Anovulation kann das Risiko eines Endometriumkarzinoms erhöht sein. Ein PCOS manifestiert sich häufig schon in der Adoleszenz. Endometriose ist eine chronische, entzündliche, hormonabhängige Erkrankung und definiert sich durch das Vorhandensein von endometriumartiger Schleimhaut außerhalb des Cavum uteri.
