{"paper_id":"799ca863-6eeb-4652-8366-1c5fe92c81b8","body_text":"Abstract\nEndometriosis is a benign estrogen-dependent clinical condition characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma in sites other than the endometrial cavity. It occurs in up to 15% of reproductive age women and can result in chronic pelvic pain and/or infertility. In its worst stages, endometriosis affects the well-being of the female patient totally and adversely, her whole spirit is broken, and yet she lives in fear of still more symptoms. It has multiple phenotypes and principally involves structures within the female pelvis, although it can also affect other tissues like the gastrointestinal tract and diaphragm. This chapter provides an overview of the pathogenesis of endometriosis, its ethnic variations, and describes current strategies for non-invasive diagnosis of the disease and steps necessary in planning for laparoscopic surgical treatment.
