This special issue about selected diseases of nonhuman primates was created in honor of Franz-Josef\nKaup, who worked as a primate pathologist at the German Primate Center (DPZ) for 25 years. In 1992, Franz-\nJosef Kaup started his career at the DPZ as head of the working group Experimental Pathology. Prior to that\nhe worked as a research assistant in the division Electron Microscopy at the Institute of Pathology of the Uni-\nversity of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. He was very experienced in the ﬁeld of electron microscopy and\nused this expertise to establish a central electron microscopy laboratory at the DPZ. In the beginning, research\nof the working group Experimental Pathology was focused on gastrointestinal and respiratory infections and\nwas closely related to projects of the Department of Virology. At that time, experimental infections of rhesus\nmacaques with simian immunodeﬁciency virus (SIV) and associated opportunistic infections became the main\nsubject of his research. The contribution of Christiane Stahl-Hennig and coauthors about SIV-induced cardio-\nvascular diseases reﬂects the still ongoing collaboration in this research ﬁeld. After merging the Experimental\nPathology and Primate Husbandry in 1996, Franz-Josef Kaup headed the newly created Department of Veteri-\nnary Medicine and Primate Husbandry. This department became the central service unit of the DPZ in 1999 and\noffered a broad spectrum of services in veterinary diagnostics, primate husbandry, and animal welfare, which\nwas intensively used by many internal and external scientists. In 2001, Walter Bodemer joined the group and the\nscientiﬁc contents expanded with a new focus on the pathogenesis of prion diseases. Some important aspects of\nthis era are summarized in the work of Walter Bodemer.\nSeveral animal models were successfully established un-\nder the leadership of Franz-Josef Kaup, including an ani-\nmal model for Helicobacter pylori infections. Currently, the\nmain research focus is on the pathogenesis of orthopoxvirus\ninfections. Kerstin Mätz-Rensing and colleagues established\na new animal model for orthopox virus infections, which is\nbased on a natural outbreak of the disease in a private New\nWorld monkey husbandry. During this outbreak, a new or-\nthopox virus was discovered, which was named calpox after\nits host species. This animal model was used for pathogenetic\nand vaccination studies in orthopox virus research. Over the\nyears, a close cooperation with several working groups work-\ning in this important ﬁeld of virus research arose. The con-\ntribution of Kerstin Mätz-Rensing gives an example of the\nexperimental work with the newly discovered calpox virus in\nclose collaboration with colleagues at the Robert Koch Insti-\ntute in Berlin.\nThe Department of Veterinary Medicine and Primate Hus-\nbandry was reorganized into the Pathology Unit and the\nCost Center Primate Husbandry, both headed by Franz-\nJosef Kaup. Since 2004, the Pathology Unit has been com-\nposed of the Primate Pathology Group headed by Kerstin\nMätz-Rensing, the Dermatopathology Group headed by Bär-\nbel Löblich-Beardi and the Herpes Virus Group headed\nby Dieter Jentsch. The research spectrum broadened with\nthe dermatopathology- and herpes-virus-related research. As\nhead of the Primate Husbandry Franz-Josef Kaup focused on\nthe herpes B problematic in macaques and supported the es-\ntablishment of herpes B diagnostics at the DPZ. Herpes B\nis of special interest when handling macaques in research\nprojects and breeding colonies. The development of a valu-\nable herpes B screening test and the current state of art at the\nDPZ is described in the contribution of Stefan Pöhlmann and\ncolleagues.\nPublished by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH (DPZ).\n\n230 K. Mätz-Rensing and M. Bleyer: Franz-Josef Kaup and the development of the Pathology Unit\nAnother important disease that can cause health problems\nin breeding colonies is endometriosis. The contributions of\nEva Gruber-Dujardin and Ivanela Kondova address this dis-\nease and its related research and lead over to spontaneous\ndiseases of nonhuman primates, which have been in the fo-\ncus of the Pathology Group for many years.\nOver the years, several important cases of emerging dis-\neases, rarely occurring neoplasia, and unique disease enti-\nties in nonhuman primates were described by this group. The\nwork by Karen Lampe about a unique T-cell lymphoma in a\npatas monkey and by Nicole Cichon about a unique granulo-\nmatous arteritis are examples of those spontaneous diseases\nobserved during routine pathomorphologic diagnostics. The\nopportunity to work on those extraordinary cases emerged\nfrom close contact with several German zoos that sought the\nexpertise of Franz-Josef Kaup’s group in the ﬁeld of pri-\nmate diseases and pathology. Other interesting case reports\nresulted from the routine clinical and diagnostic work such\nas the contribution of Tamara Becker about Guillain–Barré\nsyndrome in a rhesus monkey and Roland Plesker, a close\ncolleague from Paul Ehrlich Institute in Frankfurt, about a\ngallstone problematic.\nOver the years, Franz-Josef Kaup supported the work of\ncolleagues from the Department of Behavioral Ecology and\nSociobiology and other colleagues predominantly working in\nthe ﬁeld in the natural habitats of nonhuman primates. One of\nthe biggest health problems among natural primate colonies\nis parasites, and the articles by Andrea Springer, Peter Kap-\npeler, Fabian Leendertz reﬂect this situation.\nA cooperation with the working group of the Fraunhofer\nInstitute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM)\nin Hanover headed by Franziska Dahlmann was established\nin 2010. The ITEM group worked on primate models for ob-\nstructive lung diseases and asthma and was supported by the\nworking group Anatomy/Pathology of the Respiratory Tract\nheaded by Martina Bleyer. The contributions of Martina\nBleyer and Franziska Dahlmann in this issue will highlight\naspects of their work. Over the years, Franz-Josef Kaup’s\nmain research focuses were lung diseases, starting with the\nwork in Hanover on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease\nin horses.
