{"paper_id":"48f01650-e8f5-4eb2-8664-4fd87864132f","body_text":"Abstract\nThis chapter deals with new concepts of a previously well-established pathology, namely, endometriosis, which is now realised to be a spectrum affecting more than just the ovaries.\nEndometriomas (ovarian endometriotic cysts) have been dealt with in the chapter on ovaries (Chap. 7). Here the focus is on endometriosis outside of the ovary, primarily DIE or deep infiltrating endometriosis of the pelvis (i.e. frequently encountered, if searched for) and the rarer extra-pelvic endometriosis. DIE is a distressing and painful condition for most women, but is unfortunately not diagnosed due to lack of knowledge of the spectrum of DIE. In this chapter, the various types of DIE with their characteristics and multiple correlating ultrasound images have been provided, that help in making a diagnosis of deep infiltrating endometriosis.\nToday it is realised that not only is DIE seen in a significant percentage of women with endometriosis, but also that its presence could make surgery challenging for the surgeon (particularly if the surgeon is unprepared for DIE).
