He gave \nme the task of developing an already well-run journal.\nTo this end, it was initially important for us to place the \nmanagement function on several shoulders. I am there -\nfore very grateful that we were able to recruit Prof. Nicole \nSänger, Prof. Bernhard Krämer and Prof. Andreas Hartkopf. \nThey are currently collaborating as Deputy Editors in Chief \nand covering the subject areas of reproductive medicine, \ngeneral gynecology, and oncology, while the overall man-\nagement of the journal and the subject area of prenatal and \nobstetric medicine is in my hands. All submitted manu-\nscripts are assigned to us for a first review. Only papers with \na realistic chance of being accepted are then re-assigned to \nAssociate Editors who manage the peer review process.\nWe are also very grateful to Dr. Bettina Walter-Thorwart, \nwho supports the journal as Managing Editor, and to Ms \nBarbara Pedrotti, who is our essential link to Springer.\nIt would not be possible to manage and develop the jour-\nnal without these strong pillars.\nOf course, the Associate Editors are crucial for a timely \nevaluation of the manuscripts. Our group includes now more \nthan 25 experts in their field in gynecology and obstetrics. \nThey invite reviewers, evaluate the manuscript based on \nthe reviewers’ assessments and provide recommendations \nto Nicole, Bernhard, Andreas and me who make the final \ndecision. A special thanks also goes to our Reviewers. They \nensure that the peer review process is filled with life and \nthat only high-quality papers are accepted. 698 diverse col-\nleagues have participated in the peer review process in 2022. \nWe are particularly grateful to Prof. Katharina Rall, Prof. \nMarkus Hoopmann, Dr. Susanne Schüler, Dr. Emel Canaz \nand Dr. Felix Neis, who have done more reviews than anyone \nelse this year. We work hard to reduce the turnaround time \nand we are on a good way. On average, in 2022, we provided \na first decision within 38 days after submission compared to \n48 days in the previous year.\nIn the last 12 months, we have received more than 2,800 \nmanuscripts from all over the world. We would like to thank \nall the authors who consider publishing their work with us. \nUnfortunately, we had to reject 82% of the submitted manu-\nscripts. I know how painful and unsatisfying the rejection of \na paper can be with its significant burden of research com-\nmitment. However, we can only accept a small proportion \nof the papers that are delivered to us. Still, we would like to \nencourage everyone to send us their papers; we will take care \nof them in a timely and professional manner.\nIF (2021) reached a value of 2.493. We are indebted to \nthose authors who contributed to the rise of IF with their \noutstanding papers and to our Editors and Reviewers for \ntheir hard work and the restless commitment in selecting the \nbest journal contributions for publication. We aim to reach the \nmilestone of 1,000,000 yearly downloads in 2023.\nWe invite you to stay updated and have a look at what \nyour peers are reading most at https:// www. sprin ger. com/ \njourn al/ 404/ updat es/ 23115 864.\nThe Journal social media attention is significantly rising \nover the most recent years: + 20% in 2020, + 31% in 2021 \nand we expect to double mentions in 2022 compared to \nthe previous year. Since we are aware that social media are \nplaying a more and more active role in academic research, \nin 2022 we welcomed our Associate Editor, Prof. Florin-\nAndrei Taran, as Journal Social Media Editor. One significant innovation \nis the introduction of special issues that will focus on one \nspecific disease. We start this month with an issue on endo-\nmetriosis. It includes a very nice series of high-class article \nreviews, expert opinions, and original papers focused on this \ncutting-edge topic.\nWe hope you enjoy it and look forward to suggestions for \nfuture contributions.\nWe wish you a good start in 2023!\nStay healthy and safe.\nKind regards,\n Prof. Karl Oliver Kagan,\n Editor-in-Chief.\nFunding Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt \nDEAL.\nOpen Access This article is licensed under a Creative Commons Attri-\nbution 4.0 International License, which permits use, sharing, adapta-\ntion, distribution and reproduction in any medium or format, as long \nas you give appropriate credit to the original author(s) and the source, \nprovide a link to the Creative Commons licence, and indicate if changes \nwere made.
