To create efficient measures to relieve this congestion, its vital to comprehend the spatiotemporal patterns of this congestion. Long-term spatiotemporal patterns analysis at the city level has seldom been studied for the megacities of developing countries. To fill the gap our study intends to shed light on the temporal patterns, spatial distribution, and recurrent patterns of traffic congestion to better understand traffic’s dynamic characteristics of the fifth most traffic congested city, Dhaka. By using a big data analytical technique a sample of 350400 records for Dhaka city over a year is analyzed. The traffic data have been collected from Google Maps using our proposed data collection tool. We perform extensive image processing and analyses to identify the peak hours, congestion pattern, relationship between zones, and the reason for extreme traffic congestion. This analysis offers insightful recommendations for infrastructure development, traffic control, and urban planning for the city, of Dhaka. For the analysis, the entire Dhaka city is divided into ten zones and our study reveals that every zone has a different congestion pattern and congestion varies at weekends and weekdays differently. These discoveries provide valuable geographic traffic insights.
