I am excluding from my considerations in this paper operations for ovarian disease where hysterectomy may also be carried out, such as endometriosis, oophoritis, ovarian carcinoma and benign cysts, in which it is necessary to remove ovaries in order to eradicate disease; and hysterectomy for carcinoma of the uterine cervix or body when the ovaries are routinely removed in case they contain metastases, or to obtain a better clearance. I want instead to concentrate on the problem with which the gynaecologist is frequently faced when he is performing an abdominal hysterectomy for menorrhagia due to ovarian dysfunction or to benign lesions such as fibroids. If either ovary is diseased the gynaecologist will have to remove the abnormal part of the ovary or, more probably, the whole ovary on that side. But what should he do when both ovaries appear quite normal? In this context the patient is usually over the age of 35 or 40 years and is still menstruating.\nPreview\nUnable to display preview.
