{"paper_id":"21695bb0-d14d-4851-99f6-c267c0031656","body_text":"Abstract\nFertility has been described in demographic and epidemiological terms. However, although one can describe diseases. in the same community as one documents the pattern of fertility, it is not at present possible to describe the effect of these diseases of fertility. This is because today infertility may be voluntary or involuntary, voluntary infertility being effected through contraceptive mechanisms. There is no study relating disease and fertility that takes into account the impact of voluntary infertility. Methods of population assessment that were feasible in the precontraceptive era are no longer valid. To describe the relationship, one must therefore take couples seeking treatment for their infertility and describe the associated diseases that may be thought to be causative. For such studies to be valid, one must either have a defined population or have a control group. Data on the former have been presented by Hull et al. (1985) but the numbers are still relatively small because of the diversity of conditions and the combinations of problems in both male and female partners. There are no data available that adequately describe the relationships of the pattern in normally fertile groups.\nPreview\nUnable to display preview.
