To determine the role of cytological evaluation and to study the variants of the cytological picture in ovarian endometrioma (OE).\nPatients and methods. The examination included 146 patients with OE, who underwent sclerotherapy for ovarian endometrioma. The patients’ фмукфпу age was 25.8 ± 2.1 years ranging from 16 to 42 years. Smears prepared from OE content were stained and microscopically examined (×100–1000 with immersion).\nResults. Cytological examination of OE aspirates found a great number of lysed RBC, massive accumulations of macrophages, siderophages, haemosiderin granules, epithelial cells located in clusters, mostly without the signs of atypia – 140 (95.6%). In 2 cases, cellular atypia was diagnosed, in another 2 cases the cytological picture was characterised as suspicious of cellular atypia. These patients underwent laparoscopy, cystectomy. No signs of malignancy were found in the histological material.\nConclusion. Cytological evaluation of OE aspirate is an obligatory component in sclerotherapy of these masses. It ensures a high-precision differential diagnosis between benign and malignant tumours, which makes is possible to take an earlier decision about changing the tactics of treatment of such patients.\nKeywords: sclerotherapy, cytological evaluation, recurrence rate, ovarian endometrioma.\nFor citation: Patsap О.I., Tairova M.B., Davydov A.I., Mikhaleva L.M.
