{"paper_id":"1422a498-2197-4794-900b-22656acf1465","body_text":"Abstract\nIt is estimated that 10% of women are diagnosed with endometriosis in their lifetime. Globally, most studies of endometriosis originate from high-income countries, particularly in Europe and North America. There is considerable variation in the prevalence of endometriosis across countries and studies, ranging anywhere from 0.2% to 71.4%. Methodological differences, particularly regarding how women with endometriosis are identified and recruited, create highly variable estimates throughout the literature. The challenges in estimating the epidemiology of the endometriosis however go beyond the heterogeneity of data collation and reporting. Intersecting social, economic, cultural, healthcare and political factors often forms insurmountable barriers to diagnosis, preventing an accurate global picture of the epidemiology of endometriosis.
