Increasingly,\nendometriosis is also becoming recognized as a\ncondition in which ectopic endometrial cells exhibit\nabnormal proliferative and apoptotic regulation in\nresponse to appropriate stimuli.\nApoptosis plays a critical role in maintaining tissue\nhomeostasis and represents a normal function to\neliminate excess or dysfunctional cells. Accumulated\nevidence suggests that, in healthy women, endometrial\ncells expelled during menstruation do not survive in\nectopic locations because of programmed cell death,\nwhile decreased apoptosis may lead to the ectopic\nsurvival and implantation of these cells, resulting in the\ndevelopment of endometriosis. Both the inability of\nendometrial cells to transmit a ‘death’ signal and the\nability of endometrial cells to avoid cell death have been\nassociated with increased expression of anti-apoptotic\nfactors and decreased expression of pre-apoptotic\nfactors.\nThis paper is a review of the recent literature\nfocused on the differential expression of apoptosisassociated molecules in the normal endometria of\nwomen without endometriosis, and in the eutopic and\nectopic endometria of women with endometriosis.
